Being Good Stewards, Forever!
In 2016, Nancy Thomas and Mike Samuel put a conservation easement on their beautiful Driftless property. Now, they've added an endowment fund to ensure that future owners will carry on the vital restoration work Mike and Nancy have spent 25 years on. Learn more about this endowment and their passion for their corner of the Driftless in our Community Highlights.
Planning for the Future at Erickson Conservation Area Erickson Conservation Area, the first property that DALC invested full ownership in, has always been special. We want to say a huge THANK YOU to the volunteers who are dedicated to keeping it that way! This past January, Erickson caretakers came together to plan for the next ten years of habitat restoration and community outreach. Read more about their process and join us in giving them a shout-out here.
Upcoming CHC Bias Hearing before Wisconsin Supreme Court On Monday, February 28th, at 9:45am, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will hear oral arguments about the appearance of bias regarding former Public Service Commissioner Mike Huebsch’s private communications with CHC developers before voting to approve the transmission line. Please consider attending in-person to demonstrate your concerns about CHC! The hearing will be held in the State Capital building. Contact Chuck Tennessen (chuck@driftlessconservancy.org) with questions. If you are not able to attend in person, the Wisconsin Court System website provides information concerning audio streaming of Supreme Court hearings.
Restoration in Action Have you been looking for a way to get outside this winter? Join a DALC workday! New volunteers are always welcome. No experience is necessary to make a huge difference to the native habitats of the Driftess. On the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, 10am - 2pm, join site steward Fil Sanna at Spring Valley Preserve in New Glarus to continue habitat improvement on the savanna. The next date will be March 5th. We will also have upcoming workdays in March at Sardeson Preserve and Bloomfield Prairie, led by Cindy Becker. For contact information and more details, head to our volunteer page.

Notes From the Field Happy February! As I write this, I'm watching ice accumulate on the boughs of mature white pines, hoping they don't become too heavy and crash onto my house! In spite of the ice, we are gearing up for spring here at the DALC office. We are touching up land management plans, planning field days, and dreaming of prescribed burns. We are in the midst of closing on two new conservation easements as well! This is always an exciting time of year, and I look forward to getting out and seeing my conservation community again. I hope you can join us for a field day or work day soon! Jen Filipiak Executive Director jennifer@driftlessconservancy.org
