“I never imagined in my lifetime that I would lose my dear friend, but I have.”
Those are the words Mark Hirsch shared after That Tree was blown down in the storm that destroyed much of the Midwest earlier in August. The Burr Oak tree known as That Tree captured his heart in 2012. Sharing his photo a day project with the world through his book titled, That Tree, and on social media, That Tree captured the heart of everyone who loves a majestic Oak tree.
That Tree’s story traveled across the world. It highlighted the need to protect and care for these ancient trees whom play such a pivotal role in savanna and woodland landscapes. It provided a pathway for people to connect to Oak trees and nature. That Tree’s legacy lives on in the hearts of every person who felt inspired by her story.
You can honor the memory of That Tree and provide protection for other Oak trees in the Driftless area by making a gift to Driftless Area Land Conservancy online today. Every gift made until October 2, 2020 as a memorial gift for That Tree will be entered in a drawing to receive a sapling grown from That Tree’s acorn. One lucky person will get to continue the legacy of this beautiful tree in their very own backyard! Every gift that is $100 or more can also choose to receive as a thank you gift an autographed copy of the Mark Hirsch’s book, That Tree.
It feels like our world is full of loss in this moment. Nature is one place that offers solace. It’s hard to say good-bye to a friend like That Tree, but by connecting to nature and protecting oak landscapes we can make that good-bye a little easier.
Thank you for making a gift in memory of That Tree to Driftless Area Land Conservancy. Please visit the official rules for questions about the raffle for the That Tree sapling.
