Support the Driftless Trail this Giving Tuesday!
Next Tuesday, November 29th, join a global day of generosity! This year, DALC's Giving Tuesday will center on the Driftless Trail, our ambitious project to build a 50-mile hiking trail through eastern Iowa County. We're currently in the process of completing three trail segments - but we need your support to get them over the finish line! Plus, your gift will be MATCHED up to $5,000 by a dedicated group of friends, neighbors, and hosts of the Driftless Trail! So mark your calendar, watch your emails, and follow us on Facebook or Instagram for breaking updates on our goal. Don't miss this extraordinary day of worldwide giving!
Driftless Trail Segment Will Reopen December 1st
After donating to the Driftless Trail on Giving Tuesday, get out and explore it! We are excited to announce that the re-designed Weaver Road Segment will open on December 1, after the gun deer season is over. Find the map and description of this one-mile trail here. The first portion of the trail offers a spectacular view, but be warned that it is exposed to cold winter winds. This trail is great for hiking in light snow and snowshoeing in deeper snow, but is not good for cross-country skiing. Many thanks to our Trail Planning Team for making this happen: Bill Menke, Mark Hirsch, Nan Fey, Dave Mickelson, Karl Heil, Jen Filipiak, Zach Pacana, and Barb Barzen.
Iowa County Students Look Toward a Clean Energy Future Thanks to the generous support of members like you, DALC’s Clean, Local Energy Alliance – Now! was pleased to sponsor its first-ever Clean Energy Transition Essay Contest this fall. Students from all five Iowa County high schools considered ways their schools could work toward less expensive, cleaner uses of energy and wrote essays to share these ideas with their school boards. Winning essays will be published soon in local papers. Learn more about this fun and important contest here!
A New Way to Donate We're excited to share that DALC can now accept gifts of stock! Did you know that when you donate appreciated stocks or bonds, you could avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciation, but could still receive a tax deduction for the full value of the gift? Donating stock can be a win-win for you and for the Driftless! When you're ready to give, please fill out this form to get transfer details, or contact our Development Associate, Emilee Martell, via email or by calling (608) 930-3252. Please check with your tax advisor to determine the full deductibility of your donation.
Volunteer Opportunities There's still time to get some volunteering in in 2022! Join one of DALC's upcoming volunteer workdays and make a difference for native habitat in the Driftless.
Saturdays at Spring Valley: December 3 & 17
Sundays at Sardeson: December 4th
Wednesdays at the Wetland: December 7th

Notes From the Field Even though November brings barren hillsides and heavy frost, to me it's still a month of generosity and abundance. The pantry is full of jelly, jam, and pickles from summer gardens. Deer hunting offers us the chance to harvest the bounty of our wild surroundings. Long nights can be spent by cozy fireplaces or warm radiators, curled up with a good book. Families come together to celebrate the holidays. November is also a time when we hope abundance and generosity spills over in supporting good works, particularly with Giving Tuesday coming up. (I wouldn't be much of a fundraiser if I didn't slip in here that you can donate now on our website!) It's always a joy to see the surge of support that carries us into the new year. I look forward to writing notes and making thank-you calls to you, our wonderful supporters! Emilee Martell Development Associate emilee@driftlessconservancy.org
